The Triptych Collection

These are newly released images of work which has been produced over the late summer period and which is deeply connected to the coastline across the South of England. The steel sheets on. which the work is created measure 35-85cm in size and fit together in a variety of colour combinations. The sense of balance that Triptychs bring to a coastline that at times is quite unforgiving is something I have been trying to bring into my work since I started painting professionally.

There is almost a classic spatial harmony in the value of a triptych, my first memories of looking at this was in churches and specifically at renaissance artworks, the way in that the work presented was always able to tell a story and engage with the viewer in a way that a stand alone painting cannot. Knowing the reasons behind intrinsic and metaphysical values of triptychs to either Interior Designers or architects has become a valuable tool in my field.

The work that I produce lends to working the colours together, this is planned when starting the creative process so at the time of revealing the underlying paints by heating and scraping, I can try and bring the original coastal colour into play. Like a reverse painting, the last colour you see goes on first. The heat tends to mute the colours as the sun bleaches out the manmade across the coastline in a salty haze.

Creating this body of work usually takes about a month for the ideas to get onto the steel, sometimes a smaller colour match is created first to make sure that the colours do work together, I believe this is the part that is referred to as the artistic journey. The work is made from sketch ideas to final piece at the studio in Battle, please come and visit.
