08 Jul WXSP – Whitecross Street Party (Sat 13th July – Sun 14th July)
The Whitecross street party is an annual party on Whitecross street which focuses primarily on visual arts, as well as music and theatre. I’ve made an eight metre by one metre installation for the event. The theme of the party is Unity, and I wanted to create something that simply unifies colours together, so I focused on two main colours, Blue and pink, colours that one would associate with masculinity and femininity. There is a shard of lightning which runs completely through the installation, that binds everything together. The original inspiration was from ‘the creation of Adam’ on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, painted between 1508 and 1512. The painting itself being a fresco gave influence to this piece I made for the party due to the point of energy created between god and Adam, where the two fingers combine to create a unity between the two beings.
The piece itself is made out of 16 individual sheets of mild steel, coated with the substance ferric chloride, which is an ageing chemical which was applied to the steel before the paint. Paints and coffees where then applied onto the surface of the steel, and then heat treated until the correct tone was acquired.
