25 Mar JM Gallery Show with Hannah Ivory Baker
JM Gallery, Portobello Road, London, 19th-25 March,
Its becoming a fixture in the art calendar at the moment. Both Hannah and myself seem to be looking at opportunities at all points to collaborate on a variety of projects. At least one art fair a year (so far this year we have both shared a booth a Fresh in Alexander Palace, and now renting out the most amazing space on Portobello Road, JM Gallery for the third week of March. With lots more join t ventures in the offing, it seems to becoming a mainstay now to have a really good running partner who you can bounce ideas off. We decided against an opening night for this event, rather sticking to a more traditional late night shop, seeing as we were in the heart of West London’s shopping district.

As there is such a strong synergy between the work, we realised that by going in on a venture such as a pop up shop or an art fair together, we would both be able to play the work off against each other. It is something we both discuss when looking at what we will bring to the show at the point of pre show curation. We both had an idea of what would work well, size wise and what would be the centre pieces of the event, the smaller works, for me are more sketch book related which lead to larger pieces, so there had to be an inclusion of some kind for these during this. Hannah paints with such energy and passion, completely self taught, changing career from Tennis coach a while ago, this works well with the raw industrial energy that my work brings.

The raw beauty of the artillery shells seemed that in the pre curation phase, that they might work in a stark white space, particularly in the window area, so we agreed to show these, the collector base for the small sculptural pieces remains strong and parallels with the works on steel. I genuinely feel that the brass shining through makes a strong statement and reacts well with the calming energy from Hannah;s paintings.

Thank you to JM Gallery and especially to Hannah for continuing the curatorial journey. The catalogue for the collection can be requested as a PDF by emailing sam@samuelpeacock.com
