23 Oct Affordable Art Fair Battersea October Edition
New work being shown at the Affordable Art Fair Battersea with the George Thornton Art Gallery, October 17th-20th.
At the start of the year I was offered the chance to work more closely with the George Thornton Art Gallery. Based in Nottingham, George owns an amazing space in the heart of the city showing and selling some of the best established artwork by some amazing contemporary artists. I have known and worked with George for the past 4 years and this year have been given the chance to do several art fairs across the country with him, culminating in the Battersea edition of the Affordable Art Fair’s October edition held in Battersea Park.
I worked on some new ideas over the earlier part of the summer creating a series/collection specifically for the Affordable Art Fair. The influences derived mainly from places I had been exploring with a metal detector in and around the Sussex peninsular. One of the most noticeable aspects which I am trying to let influence some of the colours was the sheer amount of cosmic events over the past year and the various stages of the moons cycle resulting in some spectacular sunsets and sunrises, hard not to let these colours influence what you are producing.
Koeing Hill is a field located stones throwing distance from where I live. Its known as Kingsmeadow, also the site of the Hoary Apple Tree which appears in various ecclesiastical text and could possibly be shown in the Bayeux Tapestry, I state “possibly” as there are many contemporary arguments for and against this fact. The main reason for choosing this area as subject matter has nothing to do with it’s historical links, but simply that the landscape you see in front of you has not changed over the last 900 years. I had been to view the moon several times over the past year from this site and witnessed the last Lunar Eclipse from this point, a highlight for any Asterophile, Unanophile or Philouran.
Deer Point was created whilst doing site research at areas surrounding Barracks Farm in Sussex, the area is littered with discarded paths and cart ways used for trade and commerce which links the harbours of Sussex to mainland Europe. The name comes about due to sheer number of deer seen whilst out exploring. I mainly use a mix of chalk, oil and coffee mixed with paraffin wax on the surface of the paintings then proceed with using a mix of naked flame and torch to adjust the colours.
Doing Battersea is always good fun, really proud to be in my 8th year doing it now. The fair has reached its 20th year now and has become a highlight for so many artists and galleries around the globe. Will hopefully be doing the fairs for many more years to come.
